A little high culture and a little low culture......

it was a beautiful day in tokyo today. and despite it being Sunday, a weekend meaning everything outside the sanctuary of my own home is balls out crowded, i ventured to Ueno Park to see the Edvard Munch exhibit at the Museum of Western Art.

it was a wonderful exhibit! being a huge Munch fan, i was excited to see all the art (there were 108 pieces in all). His work is very dark; even the "happy ones," like the Dance of Life, depict solemn or blank faces with an air of desperation about them.

Of course the ones that struck me tho most were the ones that dealt with dark subject matter:

Vampire

Anxiety

Red Virginia Creeper

Sick Child
(i was particularly struck by how this depicted a child who's sickness is clearly something of a dire nature. That is, serious enough to make her mother break down into tears)

And of course Madonna

There were a few more that i really loved but of course they didn't have postcards of them that i could purchase. ones you can't get a peek at here on my blog but definitely worth seeing if you get a chance are Jealousy in the Garden, The Odour of a Corpse, The Death and the Maiden (a very famous piece with a naked woman making out with a skeleton), and a beautiful little crayon sketch called The Mechanic Meets His Daughter.

afterwards, i also got to check out the permanent collection including sculptures by Rodin and Monet's Waterlilies. Monet uses so much paint, every inch of the canvas is covered with layers of paint, but Munch only uses his medium where color is necessary. The economy of paint tends to show the canvas and i love the purposefulness of his strokes. Monet is great but he's definitely no Munch!

i took a stroll around the courtyard outside the museum:

Tonight i also got to enjoy a bit of mass culture with my friends as we went and saw Beowulf in 3-D after a bowl of my homemade curry. We went to this beautiful new cinema in Shinjuku (the Wald 9), snacked on some soy soft cream, put on the 3-D glasses, sat back, and had a ball. it was really quite good! i enjoyed the gore and the action. not sure how much of it sticks to the epic poem it originated from but it was certainly a good way to spend the evening. i hear that if you can get the IMAX experience, it's the best but i think the 3-D was just fine! and yes, the extra dimension really makes angelina even more booberific than usual!
