Scopin' out Sendai

When you've got money, you gots no time. and when you have time, you don't have money. so to make use of my free time with minimal cash, i took a 5 hour bus to Sendai, the biggest city in the north of Honshu island.

being on a budget means staying at the Hotel Dormy Inn. here's my very cozy room, complete with big ass massage chair which did absolutely nothing for my back. that door open on the side is for the bathroom, a foot off the ground which means i tripped trying to take a fucking leak in the middle of the night. good times.

The city is pretty accessible on foot. i covered most of the city the first day.

most of the city was destroyed in the war and was completely rebuilt with modern buildings and nice wide roads. And lots of art. i found heaps of great statues throughout the city:

the beautiful Jozen Dori:

the Sendai Mediatheque:

Nishi park:

The Hirose River from Nishi Park:

Shopping arcades (sho-ten-gai) are very popular in Japan and Sendai has some serious ones all over the the center of the city. lots of expensive brand name shops.

Mitakiyama Fudoin, a temple in the middle of the Clis Road shopping arcade:

it houses Sendai Shiro, an icon of good fortune for businesses:

the famous food up here is beef tongue and this chain has branches all over the city so i had some dinner here:

yum! it was very good:

a church at night:

Sendai has a good bus system called the Loople bus. i took it to get to the places out in the boonies. first stop, Zuihoden, the Mauseleum of Date Masamune:

next stop, the ruins of Sendai Castle (Aoba-jo):

the view from the top:

the statue of Date Masamune:

this was the most boring spot in the whole trip. there in NO CASTLE. all that's left is this wall. BORING.

next stop, the Miyagi Museum of Art:

a robot doing a giant frog. definitely art.

the garden was nice:

back in the city, some kind of fair at the civic center:

hayashi shihei:

kotodai park:

Tanikaze:

nice views from the ride home:
