The Best Email I Received this Week

from D @ 23:05 on 8/27 regarding an interesting night during his sea turtle internship outside Osaka:

"was doin nite patrol checking turtle nest and got to the end of this beach and found this crazy jellyfish worm thing. neither of us could identify it. so took it back to the office and in the light the oldest and wisest said its mochi of somekind. dissappointed we took it back to beach. as we
walked back my partner stopped and was like "wakkatta, ano adult goods." and he was right. fake pussy upon further inspection. thinkin its time to go back to school."

The Lesson: beware the jellyfish in the ocean. just in case they're not.

what's HAPPENING?

saw The Happening the other nite with a couple of friends. it wasn't a spectacular movie by any account but it's had a strange effect on me. now, everywhere i go, i see people and think, THIS is a prime opportunity for this person to kill themselves. of course it never happens (life is hardly an M. Night Shamalyan movie) but i've begun to take notice of the chances that COULD be taken to take one's own life. and although i've always considered myself more homicidal than suicidal, i have found myself looking at situations thinking, "wow, i could off myself right now if i got infected with The Happening bug."

there was a fascinating documentary that came out last year called The Bridge. it was about all the people who deliberately go to the golden gate bridge in san francisco to kill themselves. being a lazy person, i can't imagine traveling somewhere just to off myself. it just seems like a lot of work.

likewise, the murder/suicide combination also doesn't make sense. the nut case who went on a stabbing spree is akihabara (and all the subsequent iditos who followed suit in the following weeks) said he was going to turn the knife on himself. well, why don't you just go do that in the first place rather than being an asshole and killing total strangers? people like that make me want to beat the living snot out of them.

i don't remember where i was going with this.

torrential summer downpours and dates with grandpa

You know why there are so many damn mosquitos out here? because the humidity is always like 85% and we have sudden downpours every other day.

even grandpa's rain soaked tanuki looks shocked.

15 minutes after it stops raining, the mosquitos start to swarm:

one particularly heavy downpour caused a massive power outage. for those of you who down't know Bic Camera, it's one of the largest retail electronics shop in the city. and the idiots at Labi set up a competing massive electronics shop right next door. and yep, neither one of them have lights on. ah, the irony!

people who know me know that i love my granddad even though he makes me nuts. this summer has afforded us plenty of time together (lots of little adventures as my sister would call them).

grandpa is a big fan of this shitty little cafe called Cafe Cats. the room is smoky, the tables and floor are sticky, and they have all this crazy cat paraphrenelia all over the damn place. after we have a short visit with his doc, we ALWAYS have to come here so he can get his cup of coffee and a snack.

like all true members of my family, he is always happiest when he eats.

and MORE fireworks!

again, i decided not to fight the crowds for the tokyo bay fireworks. but this time, my superb view was courtesy of my one of my favorite couples in the city, S&A. cheech and i were invited out to nosh on fancy appetizers and vegetarian pizzas and get a fantastic vantage point of the festivities from the roof of their luxury apartment building.

ah, the glowing symbol of my city:

it was a fantastic view! tokyo really is beautiful from up there:

hang on the the ledge! its a LOOOOOOOONG fall!

enjoying the view:

we were even invited a floor below to the "pool." great view from there too:

thanks again for feeding us and inviting us to come play!

it ain't summer without fireworks . . . .

Ah, summer. the mosquitos, the bbqs, the beer gardens, the mosquitos, the hot sweaty mess that is you after being outdoors for 5 minutes, the mosquitos, and the fireworks. this year, i decided to observe from afar rather than fight the crowds of annoying youngsters that scream "yabai!!" after each colorful explosion. my dear friend cheech invited me to her home to watch the Toda fireworks and enjoy some good ass eats with her family and friends.

on the way to her house, we saw a parade of pigs (or "donuts" as train calls them):

grab a beer cheech!

some friends enjoying the grubbage:

poppa kawaguchi with banchan:

us plus steak! it was bangin' food!

lovey dovey couples:

banchan shucking fresh rock oysters (she is one of the coolest girls on the planet. AND she knows food):

evening descends on us:

it's showtime!

check out these two bike cops on a date. ah, romance!

breaking out the bubbly:

cheers boys!

Thanx so much for an awesome evening!
